There is indeed a night and day difference between then and now. At that time AMD was nothing more than a clone maker. They simply were licensing Intel's design. K6 was AMD's first chip which was not cloned off Intel and that was bought from Nexgen. K7 is the first chip designed by AMD.

To say that back then things were the same is foolish.

Also Intel's growth from then till now is based on feverish growth of the IT sector. There is no way, humanly possible that that growth can continue at the same compound growth rate for the next 8 years. Intel has a market cap of over $400 Billion. There is currently only 6 Billion people on earth and that is only growing at few percent per year. You can do the math.
