TiVo, ReplayTV Boxes to Be in 90 Mln US Homes, Magazine Says

New York, Aug. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The television-screening boxes sold by TiVo Inc. and ReplayTV Inc. could be in 90 million U.S. homes within a decade, the New York Times Magazine said, citing analysts' estimates.

Through June, the companies had sold about 100,000 of the devices in just over a year, largely without advertising the products. By 2002, 5 million to 7 million of the boxes will have been sold, the magazine said, citing analysts.

The figures are included in yesterday's issue of the magazine, in an article by Michael Lewis. The boxes can be programmed to select shows to a viewer's liking and to delete or skip quickly through advertisements.

The companies selling the boxes and the software that controls them are ``seizing control'' of the $50 billion television industry, the article said.
