HORSHAM, Pa., and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector announced today that it has entered into a comprehensive video, voice, and data supply memorandum of understanding with AT&T Broadband.
The arrangement maintains Motorola as a primary supplier of digital technology to AT&T. This supply arrangement specifies that Motorola will provide the majority of AT&T's advanced interactive digital set-top terminals through 2003. AT&T has also committed to launch Motorola's digital technology in the major markets it recently acquired. Motorola's digital technology, including its digital conditional access system, incorporates the American National Standards Institute-certified Data Encryption System standard as published by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers. Motorola will work with AT&T and the cable television industry to publish the remaining pieces of the DES algorithm, moving it to a North American standard.
Under this arrangement, AT&T Broadband plans to purchase 700,000 Motorola cable modems certified to comply with Cable Televisions Laboratories, Inc.'s (CableLabs(R)) Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) -- [specifically, the SURFboard(R) SB3100 and SB4100] -- through the end of next year, along with a commitment to deploy Motorola's cable modem termination system equipment.
In addition to Motorola's video and data solutions, AT&T has selected Motorola as an initial provider of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. AT&T plans to launch Motorola's Switched IP access solution in two major markets and has made a commitment to purchase Motorola's CentriQ(TM) customer premises equipment. AT&T expects to begin a trial deployment of Motorola's Switched IP access solution later this year.
"We are pleased to have Motorola working with us as we continue to extend the reach and power of digital technology," said Tony Werner, chief technology officer for AT&T Broadband. "Motorola has proven that they have a powerful, secure digital set-top platform. Promotion of their DES implementation as a standard for others to build to will benefit them, as well as the marketplace, and most importantly, consumers. We are also impressed with their work in the area of VoIP technology. They have extended their experience to bring VoIP products and architecture to market in record time."
"This significant commitment from AT&T Broadband -- an industry leader -- supports our `triple-play' convergence message," said Ed Breen, executive vice president for Motorola and president of the Motorola Broadband Communications Sector. "The convergence of video, voice, and data is a reality today; and AT&T Broadband's selection of Motorola as a key technology supplier clearly shows that we are a leader in this technology revolution."
Accelerating Retail Distribution
AT&T also plans to work with Motorola on retail distribution strategies for set-top terminals and cable modems. AT&T already has ordered Point-of- Deployment security modules from Motorola that will inter-operate with OpenCable(TM)-specified set-top hosts for retail distribution channels. OpenCable is a CableLabs initiative aimed at developing a new generation of set-top boxes that are interoperable with the legacy of proprietary systems already deployed in the United States. |
