Compare us to other countries:

A friend of mine from Sweden - notoriously high tax rates - told me that his wife once opened a hair salon, but could not make money because she had to pay 50% of her income in taxes. Here, if she opened a business, she pays roughly 13% SS/self-employment, 28% FICA, plus property taxes and all kinds of ridiculous insurance - not much of a difference. However, in Sweden, all health care and college is free. So we in the U.S. are paying just about as much as they pay, but getting SO much less in return.
