WIND--Wind River Taps Telestream for ``Cool Customer Design'' Award Powerful Embedded Software Enables Innovative, Award-Winning Digital Media Technology ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2000--Recognizing innovative design and creative use of technology, Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), has bestowed it latest ``Cool Customer Design'' award on Telestream's ClipExpress(TM) digital media delivery system - windriver.com. Until recently, delivering professional-quality media from a production house to a television station or advertising agency required an overnight courier service or satellite link. But with help from a highly customized but flexible graphical user interface (GUI) built with Wind River's Zinc(TM) for VxWorks® technology, the ClipExpress has changed all that.
``To spark a revolution in replacing physical videotape delivery with digital media delivery, Telestream needed the best possible integrated development tools, GUI platform, and embedded software solutions,'' said Dan Castles, president/CEO for Telestream. ``We were so happy with Wind River products and support the first time around with the ClipMail Pro(TM), that it was a natural choice to use them again when developing the ClipExpress. Wind River's innovative leadership in consumer electronics software technology, tools, support, and services allowed us to focus on the value-added features of our products without agonizing over how to develop the fundamental operating software.''
The ClipExpress is the low-cost version of Telestream's Internet video delivery technology. It's forerunner, the higher-end, professional ClipMail Pro, was also designed using Wind River technology. Both products have won numerous industry awards for innovation, including the Millimeter Tommy, Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit, Government Video NAB Top 10, Video Systems Top Product of the Year Vanguard, Television Broadcast NAB Editors Pick of Show, and Videography NAB Editors Choice.
Telestream's cutting-edge technology has gained acceptance by major broadcast and production companies around the world. Companies such as APTN, Fox, CNN, Discovery, and Time Warner Cable use Telestream products to transport high-quality video, audio, and data over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, as a time-efficient and cost-effective alternative to satellites and courier services. In addition, the technology has applications in government, military, and business communications, education and training, and telemedicine.
``Telestream's products are a great example of how easy Wind River has made it for consumer electronics manufacturers to bring complex innovations to reality,'' said Curt Schacker, Wind River's vice president of marketing. ``In this case, our tools and products made Telestream's integration process smooth and seamless, from the operating system to the networking stacks all the way up to the user interface. That they are using Wind River again and again is only a testament to their satisfaction with our products and services.''
The Telestream ClipExpress runs on Wind River's VxWorks real-time operating system and uses Wind River's Tornado®- tools-integrated Transmission Control Protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and file transfer protocol (FTP) stacks to support full communication between the ClipExpress and FTP servers for sending/putting and pulling/getting video files. To ensure market acceptance, Telestream wanted the product to have a highly intuitive user interface, making it as easy as sending an email or fax. The Wind River Zinc graphical application framework provided Telestream with a completely object-oriented C++ application program interface for the creation of the desired GUI in the context of the ClipExpress event-driven application.
