RCN Continues Expansion in Northern California; Wins Local Regulatory Approval to Offer Bundled Telecom Services ================================================================ Residents of Burlingame Are the Latest to Benefit From Competition
PRINCETON, N.J., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- RCN Corporation (NASDAQ:RCNC) announced today that it had received local regulatory approval to construct its high-capacity, broadband network in Burlingame, Calif. and offer the community's residents its bundled phone, cable and Internet services. RCN is moving swiftly through California, with Burlingame's unanimous approval following on the heels of approvals in Beverly Hills and Gardenia six weeks earlier. "RCN has been well-received throughout California and we are looking forward to providing the residents of Burlingame with a choice in telecommunications providers," said Mike Adams, RCN's President and Chief Operating Officer. "While Burlingame will benefit from our competitive, facilities-based services, the city is also an excellent fit for RCN. The community has a density more than four times the national average of 30 homes per mile and we anticipate the same warm reception to our phone, cable and Internet bundle that we have received in neighboring communities." RCN is targeting the most densely populated residential areas in the country, currently focusing on the build-out and delivery of services from San Francisco to San Diego and from Boston to Washington, D.C., as well as the city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The company is currently offering its bundled phone, cable and high-speed Internet services to the northern California communities of South San Francisco, San Mateo and Daly City and is constructing its Megaband(TM) Network in Redwood City. RCN is also constructing its network in Los Angeles through an alliance with Southern California Edison. To date, RCN has designed or built 4,300 fiber miles of its high-capacity network in California. |
