Truck roll - predictable costs
Self install - unpredictable costs
Added value - cost reduction
Solution - some combination of truck rolls and self installs with cost risk shifted to consumer choice

Self install kits are already being used by Cablevision...but not in conjunction with @Home.

The only way for a self install to be accomplished without a truck roll is to have the two-way HFC already in place to the right location in the house. Then the consumer can hook up a cable ready appliance, pop in a self install software CD and viola you are surfing the net at BB speed.

What the self install kit can do for us is reduce the time per installation, and increase the number of truck rolls per day. The crew installs the two way cable to the proper location in the house, tests the installation and leaves to the next location. The consumer then completes the installation using the self install kit.

I have also heard of technology where by the cable can be run to the outside of the house. This box then transmits and receives radio signals to your tv/computer/internet appliance regardless of it's location in the house.

One can dream...
