...he [Lincoln] did fairly well in a very small one room school...

When I read stuff like the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, and the speeches and letters of these one-room schoolhouse educated people, I'm totally embarrassed by my language abilities. I'm barely able to understand what they wrote, let alone write anything approaching the clarity of thought and articulate expression exemplified in their work.

I once saw a primary-school graduation exam from 1900. Reading this focused my attention on just how much effort was put into schoolwork by my parents and grandparents. I doubt today's university graduates could comprehend the questions, let alone answer any. (Ok, a few, maybe!)

Cheers, PW.
