When were you in? I was on the Finback SSN-670 until 83. Now mothballed:( Guess that I am getting old.

We always called the escape trunks the Mom's pacifier as you could only escape from less the 400 ft. and we never would dive until the 100 fathom curve. Always operated deep enough that if we didn't go up the bottom was not a concern:) Had a flood in the engine room once that was a little more exciting then I care to remember. Fortunately at the time you are to busy to think about what happens if the emergency blow isn't enough!
