Since digital photography is not a subject of this thread
I will be short
Some day it will, however to make a business case someone have to sell consumables to make money.

Almost nobody is making money on digital cameras, which are very expensive and will cost what traditional hardware cost now, plus electronic components. Traditional hardware is already manufactured in the cheapest places on the earth( not each component) so forget about 100$ good digital camera, unless someone is "blind" and do not care what he/see is viewing
Prints and digital services are the name of the game in the future.
One developed film frame cost about quarter and have

a) 50-100 Mbit of information-very high resolution.
b) cost of producing single used camera is 4$.You can scan
the film, put image into computer and have better image then using 1000$ camera which is sold under cost anyway
c) recently Sony announced digital camera ( 1200$) with 4$
disc capable to store 160 pictures. Well if you want to have good quality images, number of pictures will be 10 may be 20.
Cost of camera will cover cost of 200 developed films + prints, what will cover need of average US customer for almost 20 years.
I do not see any economics for most of people, unless tou are
working in real estate, police etc.
In my opinion slaes of films and slides will be very healthy for the next 10 years on global bases, including US and Europe.
Watch for more injeckt application( consumables) and profitable digital services, not necessary start-up loosing money hype.
Ask HWP were they made most of they money- consumables.
For digital services we need to connect most people with
VDSL or fiber to download good image quickly ( 5+ Mbit of info)
