Best done by computing the number for an eighth of the circle and multiplying by eight... The first eighth of the standard circle (i.e. theta from 0 to 2Pi/8) involves a height of 100mm * sin(45) = 71mm. That distance will intersect 71mm/sqrt(117mmxmm) = 6.56 rows of die. Multiplying by 8 gives 52.5 die total, which is about how you got your figure, I suppose.

But since each of these is only (on average) half a die, the actual area loss is about half that, or 26 die total.

As far as 50% being an unacceptable yield, it just depends on the part. It has long been the case that larger parts are made with lower yields. There are parts that have been sold commercially with yields far below 50%, but I don't know the processor business specifically. Certainly for a small processor (or for a commodity memory chip or a typical chipset part like an i82820) 50% yields would be pretty bad. But for high end processors?
