It costs more to maintain your household, and your business- why shouldn't it cost money to maintain and staff the schools?

I sympathize and agree with your statement, but I am curious what happens to all the money spent on education. I'm an engineer. In addition to my salary, it costs my company aproxiametely my salary once over again for my share of overhead, equipment, support, etc. That a teacher making (say) 40k a year needs 6 times that for overhead strikes me as being a little...disturbing.
