This past weekend, an orthodox Rabbi explained that certain duties which can be defined as being for the good of all absolve an orthodox Jew from those requirements. Lieberman and his duties, the Rabbi stated, falls under that definition.

It was also pointed out that January 20th (Inauguration Day) falls on Saturday in 2001 -- of course Saturday is the day of the Sabbath. Lieberman affirmed that he will be there to take the oath of office if he and Gore win the election, but he will most likely decline to attend any of the parties, etc.
