Motorola NSS Announces Plans For cdma2000 1xEV-DO Solutions
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2000--Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE:MOT - news) Network Solutions Sector (NSS), a leading provider of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) infrastructure, handsets and wireless Internet solutions, today outlined its plans for supplying cdma2000 1xEV-DO (1x Evolution-Data Only) as the next step in the evolution of third generation (3G) wireless systems. The CDMA standard endorsed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is cdma2000 1x; cdma2000 1xEV-DO is the next generation of this technology and is based on the CDMA High Data Rate (HDR) technology developed by Qualcomm, Inc. (Nasdaq:QCOM - news).
The 1xEV technology evolution, which is being supported by both Motorola and Qualcomm, is being developed in two standards processes. The first technology standard, called 1xEV-DO, is scheduled to be complete by the third quarter of this year. By the second half of 2001, an approved industry schedule for phase two of the technology standard, called 1xEV-DV (data and voice), is set to be determined.
``CDMA technology standards are driven by carrier operators worldwide with significant input from companies like Motorola that push the boundaries of wireless technology,'' said Adrian Nemcek, Motorola NSS senior vice president. ``Our customers have decided that 1xEV-DO is the next step in enhancing wireless data throughput, and Motorola plans to provide networks that are compliant to the final CDMA 1xEV-DO standard in order to meet our customer's expectations for end-to-end solutions in a timely manner,'' said Nemcek.
``The 1xEV-DO standard will significantly enhance data throughput rates for wireless Internet users,'' Nemcek said. ``The technology evolution will include further enhancements in data throughput over time, granting users the ability to do tasks on their phones that were not even conceivable just a few years ago,'' said Nemcek.
Motorola expects to begin cdma2000 1x field trials in the fourth quarter of 2000 and conclude trials in the first quarter of 2001. Commercial software and hardware to allow customer implementation of cdma2000 1x is expected to be available starting in the third quarter of 2001. Motorola will be developing cdma2000 1x compatible handsets and a family of end-to-end solutions to enhance each CDMA carrier's value proposition in the highly competitive wireless market.
``Motorola's major CDMA customers in North America and Japan voted in favor of the new EV-DO standard, so that is exactly what we are going to give them. We want to provide our customers with smart solutions that will accelerate their time-to-market and allow existing networks to smoothly migrate to new CDMA technology,'' said Nemcek.
