It knew that DDR infringed its SLR design patent (2 bits transfer in one clock cylce; one bit at each edge of the clock) in 1996 when DDR was drafted, but kept silence instead to let DDR fall into a deeper trap. And, 5 years later after DDR starts to hit the market, it went on and sue DDR for more $$$$.
It is too late now for DDR to start over at the drawing board. By that time, RMBS yield has already improved and all DRAM memory market has already fall to RMBS hand.
I don't know how anybody could come up with better idea to solve the bus bandwidth. Currently, there are only 3 ways of doing it.
1. Increase the clock speed - We did PC33 -> PC66 -> PC133. Can not crank up any further. Sorry.
2. Increase data width - We did. 8 bit- 16 bit - 32 bit - more pins -> more space on chip -> more expensive -> not feasible.
3. Transfer more bits per clock cylcle. That what make RMBS today. Patents are already locked for this. "Plurality" is used in RMBS patent to cover >1 bit per cycle. That's meant if you want to transfer more than 1 bit per cycle, you talk to RMBS.
Simple! DDR infringed because it attempts to transfer 2 bits per cycle to double up the current SDRAM speed.
4. Nobody has come up with anything yet. For now, Solution 3 is the best, since 1 & 2 are become infeasible. Meanwhile,
RMBS keep collecting money and dominate the memory market with its bright idea.

I start to like this Money-making devil.

Sorry shorts, I just like to tell the truth.
