I am aware of most of these issues and don't feel the need to do an exhaustive study on the Net, as these are probably the biggies. I can name as my beneficiary in most cases who ever I want. Health insurance may be one issue where a legal relationship based on family dependencies is a benefit, but not always. My mother in law lived with me for a couple of years and was totally dependent on my household, yet we couldn't get her included in the health insurance policy. Insurance companies decide on their own who they will qualify as a medical dependant and who they wont. To change the legal structure of who is legally related might cause the insurance companies to change their structuring, if so it would also change the price structuring. Seems just as easy to get separate policies.
