Experts Forecast Non-Renewal Of Oil Sanctions Act Under Bush Or Gore
Bernama The MNNA - Malaysia, August 7
By MATTHEW JONES

WASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- A White House under the control of either George W. Bush or Al Gore is likely to see non-renewal of the controversial act prohibiting investment in the Iranian and Libyan energy sector, experts predicted.

The Iran-Libya Sanctions Act, which seeks to fine foreign firms investing in those countries' oil and gas industries, expires in August 2001.

Experts believed neither Republican Bush nor Democrat's Gore in this year's United States presidential election would seek to renew the act.

The controversial act raised a lot of concerns from oil and gas companies from Canada, Malaysia, France and Russia, which have investments in either of those two countries.

Bush's running mate Richard Cheney, who served as chairman of an oil company, had advocated lifting the Clinton ban on investment in Iran's energy sector even prior to his nomination as Bush's running mate.

Cheney led the US effort in the Gulf War as defence secretary under his father, former President Bush.
