Your point is that the Democrats were more ideologically blinkered than the Communists? That Communists were more likely to weigh the situation accurately than Americans? It seems to me the only point that you have is that Goldwater happened to lose that election. Since the most one can infer is that the time was not ripe, or he did a poor job of controlling the message, it does not seem very generalizable.

Given that American prestige had already been put on the line, it was not dismissable at all that an effort for a decisive win would be mounted. Furthermore, if Americans had understood Vietnamese/ Chinese antipathy, we would have known that a situation similar to that in Korea was unlikely. In Korea, the issue was what would happen if we invaded China to deny sanctuary and logistical support. We were nowhere near that situation. Why should it be likely that either China or Russia would engage in nuclear war over Vietnam? Such an outcome was, in fact, ludicrous........
