Thanx for your fine reply Michael. Why miffed?...you ask. Well it's mainly because of VRTA's claim to have complete solutions when it is in reference to their Helium chip. My understanding is other products are required to make a complete solution. Here is a link to how Aware saw it back in January...
Aware’s Perspective on ADI and Virata’s Announcement to Develop Reference Design Solutions

As for the WSTL SEC 10K filing they mention Fujitsu Telecom Europe, Limited (FTEL), but they do say as you stated...they're dependent on Alcatel and Virata. They go on to say they have no long term contracts and experience shortages of those supplies. It would concern me if I still held WSTL stock when I read they are dependent on Alcatel and they list Alcatel as a competitor.
Westell incorporates DMT technology into its DSL products. The Company has not developed DMT transceiver technology for its product offerings and it is dependent on transceiver technologies sourced from third parties. The Company has established multiple strategic relationships with transceiver technology vendors for DSL chipsets to be used in ADSL systems by the Company.
COMPETITION
The markets for the Company's products are intensely competitive and the Company expects competition to increase in the future, especially in the emerging DSL market. Westell's primary competitors vary by business unit. The Company's principal competitors with respect to its TAP business unit are Adtran, Inc., ADC, HyperEdge, and Applied Digital Access Inc. The Company's current competitors in the CPE business unit are primarily Alcatel Network Systems, Efficient Networks, Cisco Systems, Intel and 3Com. Although the Transport Systems business unit provides equipment in partnership with FTEL, direct competitors in these markets include Alcatel, Nortel, Lucent, Cisco, and Siemens.
What I see WSTL saying is they're having a problem securing components for their DMT DSL products and have only been able to get contracts with ALA & VRTA. Both ALA & VRTA are having problems...ALA has a poor chip product and is short of production capacity and VRTA is FABless and not sure of their supply. WSTL does refer to third party supplies, although not by name.
TI has me baffled too. They had licensed with AWRE at one point and seemed to have all their ducks lined up with the Amati purchass, but still they appear to have very little influence in the ADSL rollout.
Since VRTA & ADI have yet to complete their mission I would not expect to hear much until the do.
As you may have heard in the ADI CC, ADI has a forth coming announcement....I believe they said "major" announcement. AWRE said something very much like that with the same time frame. I wonder wha'sup! |
