Your friend must have gone fishing in Southeastern Alaska. You can buy a G* phone through dealers in Ketchikan, Juneau and Craig. That covers about 5% of the pilots and outfitters in Alaska. In Anchorage where I live and where someone could sell phones to 65-70% of the Alaska market there will be a local vendor "soon" according to Sam at World Communications who I understand control the marketing rights to Alaska. When I met last week with executives of Alaska Digitel, the local CDMA wireless operator, they had barely heard of G* and had not yet even inquired as to how their customer base could cover up the many holes in their coverage, let alone how they could sell G* phones to augment their service.
I agree with Gregg Powers that the vertical market for private pilots is huge. I also will not be surprised if someday it is the law for guides, outfitters, and the like who make a living taking others into the wilderness not to carry an operable sat phone with them for emergencies.
