The cow statues are NOT original to NY City. Chicago did the cow statue thing several years ago. The first cow statue display originated in Europe, Switzerland as I recall.

Various businesses sponsored an artist to design the cow starting with a standard issue fiberglass cow. After the display on the streets in Chicago, the cows were auctioned with proceed to charity. Some of the businesses bought their sponsored cow at auction and have the cow on display.
