You know, I really think that story is just as much BS as the rest.
Dude gets the car on the rails. Then he drives down a mile to drive the spike in that trips the braking system. They drive back to the car and fire it off. They're more or less direcly behind it when you figure on it being a mile down the tracks.
1. The smoke would keep them from seeing anything. If the car hit 180mph then it would be at the mile marker in 20 seconds, doubtful the smoke cleared that fast.
2. You ever try to make out much detail at a mile plus? The car travels not just the mile but also whatever braking distance they had set up before crunching at the mine entrance, yet dude sees all of this well enough to describe it so vividly. BS.

It all sounds Wonder Years and all, but I don't buy it.
