The underlying problem here is the notion that children belong first to the state -- that biological parents are allowed to retain custody only at the discretion of school and "child welfare" officials,...

Actually there's an even bigger underlying problem in America which leads to this conclusion by the state and school officials that they are better equipped to decide what is good for our children. The real problem in my opinion is that a large majority of the parents in this country don't put their children's welfare and needs ahead of their own needs. It seems everything comes before the kids ... the job, the house, the cars blah blah blah. It's no bloody wonder these kids have so many problems.

The state doesn't have more authority over your children than you do. You can at any time choose to take your children out of the school system and teach them yourself if they can't cope in the normal school system without medication. It's time parents took responsibility for their children instead of throwing them into the school's court. The schools are there to educate your kids not to have to cope with all the other problems the parents should be dealing with.

I speak as a parent who has a child with special needs. I chose to take my son out of the school system instead of medicating him. The school was very supportive of my decision. It would be much better for the kids if the schools and parents would work together to solve their children's problems rather than keep pointing the finger at each other.
