ADVISORY/US & Malaysian Companies Team-up to make International Travel
Safer World's First Biometrics-Based Airport Security System

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Dr. Alan Samuels, Visionics Corporation, (518) 537-5979
More Details at Press Conference: CardTech/SecurTech 97
Orlando Florida, Orange County Convention Center
Room 101, 8:00-8:30AM, Tuesday, May 20, 1997

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad,
will witness the signing of the agreement between
TL Technology Research (Malaysia) and Visionics Corporation
at noon Tuesday in London

Executives from TL Technology Research (TLTR), a Malaysian-based
leader in airport security system development, and Visionics
Corporation, a US-based leader in face recognition technology, are
expected to announce at a press conference on Tuesday that they have
signed an agreement that gives TLTR a license to use Visionics'
FaceIt face recognition technology for the world's first
biometrics-based Airline Passenger and Baggage Security System.
The system will use face recognition technology (in addition to
other biometrics) to ensure that only the "true" passengers get to
enter the departure lounge and subsequently board the aircraft and
that luggage only from passengers who boarded the plane is loaded.
During the boarding process the system automatically and instantly
matches a passenger's live face from a video camera to that encoded
on a smart chip on the boarding pass issued at check-in. The system
is intended to make international travel safer without burdening
travelers with long lines.
Under the terms of the agreement TLTR will have exclusive rights
to incorporate Visionics' face recognition technology into its system in
Malaysia and four other Pacific Rim countries. IRIS Technologies (M)
Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian-based worldwide leader in smart card
manufacturing, will provide the smart chips for both boarding passes
and luggage. The overall system will be part of the IRIS Integrated
Passenger Baggage Security System. The first installation of this
system will be in operation at the Langkawi International Airport in
Malaysia in July 1997.
TLTR executives said that they selected Visionics' technology
because they found it is superior to other face recognition systems.
Visionics' CEO, Dr. Joseph Atick is not surprised "When the need is
mission critical and companies do their due diligence, Visionics is
chosen as the biometric of choice. Several US government agencies
have already done so after their testing demonstrated that FaceIt
out-performed all other face recognition systems. We are delighted
to be working with fast-moving companies such as TL Technologies
Research and IRIS."

Stephen Weiss, General Counsel to TLTR and a partner at the
international law firm of Graham and James, LLP (New York) said that
"This is an example of how international cooperation can lead to
solutions of global problems. TLTR has taken the first step in
making this world a little safer for international travelers."
Executives from both companies will provide further details at
their joint press conference on Tuesday, May 20, 1997 at 8:00 AM (see above
information.)
Also at 12:00 PM that day, the prime minister of Malaysia, Dr.
Mahathir Mohamad, is expected to witness a ceremonial signing of the
agreement from London.
Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has been very active in promoting Cooperation
between US and Malaysian companies as Malaysia moves forward with its
Malaysian Super Corridor (MSC) project-a forty-billion dollar high
technology industrial zone 9 miles wide and 30 miles long, extending
south from Kuala Lumpur. TLTR and its affiliates are leading
participants in the MSC and company executives emphasized that all
manufacturing for this project is done at company facilities at the
MSC.
