I wonder how much of those small significantly different trades are just someone trying to manipulate and maximize margin availability in much larger account? At least at my broker, they figure the closing position (and thus margin availability) on listed stocks based on the last trade, rather than the bid or ask. Bump the last trade by a buck on a 100 share trade and on a 100,000 share account, you create an additional $50K in margin availability. On that size account, it is not much in relative terms, but in some cases, every little bit helps.

It is at least a (somewhat) logical explanation, even if not the real reason.
