Yeah, I bought it specially for the trip, with extra batteries and cassettes, and I have no idea yet if I am covered. It was about $1450 worth of stuff in the bag. I will start calling around, maybe today, to see if I have some kind of coverage. Still, the main purpose will be screwed.
Don't feel bad. The guidebooks mentioned something about it, but not really how bad it is. I have been to NYC innumerable times, and never been robbed. Only once did my wife have her purse snatched in Washington, and that was on a bus. I knew that if anything went, it was likely to be the camcorder, because we are pretty careful with wallets and purses, but we felt safe in the tour collection point, and so I decided not to worry about it being on the floor.
