I think I understand you, and I agree that fairness is the issue. It seems clear to me that lower income people are not paying too much in the way of taxes, unless they deserve a free ride. (I'm conceding the point that 1/2 the population pays 4% of income tax). Net worth is not a good measure for taxation. Should you pay taxes every year because you have money, but no income? If you did well and retire at 45 with 10 Mil, do you still owe? The government takes at least its fair share in my experience. I had a business and didn't pay myself much as I tried to build it. When I sold it I got creamed. In addition, a late filing while trying to sort out tax code issues cost me a 25%! penalty. The government or "the people" made much more from that business than I did, and they didn't risk, worry, work or sweat one day to do so. The huge penalty for technical violations was not fair either. Taxes could be simple enough for all of us to understand as we plan our financial lives. I could have suffered lesser penalties for many criminal offences. I am not worried that the government won't take from someone who makes some money. It also seems to me the tax code is largely the work of the democrats, who were in control of both houses 40 years running. I am for less taxes and less pooling of the peoples' money into the hands of politicians.
