IMT-2000 Service Providers Narrows to Korea Telecom, LG, SK

Potential providers of the IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunication) third generation (3G) mobile communications services have been narrowed down to Korea Telecom, LG and SK.

The sudden change on the competition map came when Korea IMT- 2000, a consortium of leading small and medium-size information technology companies, apparently decided to disband.

A steering committee of Korea IMT-2000 reportedly met Wednesday to discuss the possibility of its members pairing up with the remaining three contenders and the participants have apparently agreed.

While discussions on who will pair with who appear to be complete, there is the question of who will be given how much ownership in the new partnership and an official announcement is expected next week.

Basically, the break-up of Korea IMT-2000 resulted from the pairing of Hanaro Telecom with LG Telecom, Onse Telecom and Promising Information and Communication Companies Association with SK Telecom.

``Companies like Hanaro and Onse are in a position to demand huge stakes in their respective partnerships since they are strong competitors in their own right and have performed the service of taking the fourth applicant out of the picture,'' one industry analyst said.

With Korea IMT-2000 not in the running, there are only three remaining contenders and the government has said it will hand out licenses to as many consortiums.

In addition to the pairing and the completion of the formation of the consortium, it has become clear that Korea Telecom will be the only company adopting the synchronous technology popular in the United States.
