mindmeld: Regarding "pooling of interest" accounting, new FASB rules throw a bone to the techies by requiring disclosure of earnings and per share figures both before and after "Goodwill Amortization" so that analysts can exclude such amortization if they see it as an extraordinary item.

I believe that approval of the new FASB rule has been deferred to 2001 first quarter. Any pooling mergers announced prior to such approval would still be permitted to be accounted for under the old rules.

FYI, I believe that the USA is the only country in the world that still permits "pooling of interest" accounting for mergers.

Aside from the practical benefits of not penalizing future earnings with goodwill amortization charges over the next 20 years, doesn't it seem strange to buy a company in exchange for shares of high value, and not record that investment at the value paid ? Sure does to me - maybe I'm missing something :-)
