There you go again, Jon!
Clearly, until distorted by you, my intent with the term "parlaying" was meant only to express Todd transformed intelligent material to this thread in an unverbetim manner. This information was "equal" in value relative to how it was presented to him.
It's noteworthy that Todd actually qualified his work in his opening paragraph. That this information came to have greater value exists only because the receptive audience of the information increased. It became WE who understood this information, and not merely TODD. And I submit there is "greater value" with our collective consciousness, rather than the value which exists only in Todd's consciousness. Thus "parlaying" was appropriate.
Read, and let sink into your consciousness, the below etymology from Merriman's definition of parlaying: "...perhaps from paro equal, from Latin par."
Further read in 2 (b): "to increase or otherwise transform into something of much greater value." One need not have to "increase," rather one need only "transform" intelligent material. The "greater value" exists for the consciousness of the reader.
For example, if you, a writer, lift a word or a phrase from another writer, you are parlaying that word or phrase for greater value. And do note that neither the word nor the phrase become changed in the process of parlaying.
If anyone is "exploiting" anything, it is you! Please read on:

Now, just so I'll know you'll completely understand my writing, I now refer you to the definition of "par."
Definition Number 1 relates to monetary value, however definitions 2 through 4 are applicable:
2 : common level : EQUALITY -- usually used with on <judged the recording to be on a par with previous ones> 3 a : an amount taken as an average or norm b : an accepted standard; specifically : a usual standard of physical condition or health 4 : the score standard for each hole of a golf course; also: a score equal to par<<<

IMPORTANT (or is it?): During all of years I've bantered back and forth with you, rarely have you ever spelled "ridiculous" correctly. It is, for purposes of general acceptance, never spelled with an "e." Thus, perhaps this should become a self-reflective exercise for your own consciousness. Good luck getting it right! |
