A couple of points.... Value Chain for SUN? Sun themselves suggests this is in positioning themselves as a one-stop shopping destination for companies going on the Internet. 1- JAVA, EJB, CORBA efforts What does CORBA have to do with Sun? While Sun has been very successful in getting wide adoption of Java and, with J2EE has matured it into a serious language, it isn't clear that they are actually going to make a lot of money from it. open-source price (free) ditto b) Netware is dying, an distant offshoot of UNIX It would take considerable imagination to find a connection between the two. c) LINUX is taking off, but seems limited compared to Solaris Sun themselves seems to be promoting the idea that one might want to use Linux at the low end and "grow up" to Solaris at the high end, but I think Sun has actually taken a position where it doesn't matter how good Linux gets since Solaris itself is not a profit center that matters. EndGame: Solaris, JAVA widespread deployment + Software Alliances & bundling, And let's not forget Forte, right there inside Sun, providing not only the best application development tools for scalable distributed computing, whether one picks C++ or Java, but the best EAI tool ... both of which are key ingredients in large companies coming to the Internet. I think it should at least be added as a KING in the G&K portfolio Errr... already there and has been for a long time.
