Everybody pays FICA, not just the lower net worth people.

But I agree with you that SS is a regressive tax that is not included in the official income tax stats. The 4% number that the bottom half of taxpayers pay refers only to federal income tax. Excluded also are state and misc taxes, most of which tend to be flat rate or consumption based.
