The German market is certainly interesting for AMD. Census figures (admittedly from Jan 99) show that only 45% of households had computers, with 11% connected to Internet. Sounds like much scope for sales growth, given a population of 82 million, all comparatively well off from looking at the household analysis below.
Lack of Durons on the shelves at Fry's may not imply the disaster that many have suggested. Maybe AMD are truly sold out for the quarter (as their PR has said repeatedly), just not necessarily sold in the US.

96% of the households were equipped with TV sets. More than 60% of those households had one, 30% two, and 10% three or more TV sets. Today, nearly two thirds (66%) of German households have video recorders.
45% of the households had personal computers in January 1999.
In January 1999, 11% of the households had Internet access (1998: 7%). 11% of private households were equipped with modems for remote data transmission, and 5% had ISDN access.
Almost every household had a telephone (99%), while just under 40% were equipped with answering machines in January 1999. 15% of the households had fax machines.
About 45% of the households had dishwashers in January 1999. On average, 30% of all households were equipped with driers, and more than half of the households (53%) have microwave ovens today.
