make no mistake, i recommend intel pentium because i've always owned them and i'm into the brand recognition thing. i love the company's product line and i don't think anyone can consistently beat them at their game.

many people have pointed out here on this thread the validity of trying to find the sweet spot with processors... that is, the place where the best performance is available for the least money. i'd add to that definition, where the product has been 'field tested' by consumers for a while and any defects or bugs have been discovered.

with that in mind, i like rich's good advice to go for something along the lines of a 700mhz cpu. i haven't spent any time pricing chips recently, though
