If you pave it, they will park
(Austin American-Statesman, Fri Aug 18, 2000, p. D1)

Fast-growing Applied Materials Inc. solved one of its most pressing workplace issues last week -- it built a parking lot closer to where most of its 4500 workers work.

The company said the 550 new spaces should help more workers get to meetings on time and reduce the level of "guerilla parking."

Although Applied was running a shuttle bus service to help workers cover the half-mile or so from its largest parking lot to its new manufacturing buildings, many employees took their own creative approaches to parking.

The company, which has doubled its employment in the past year at its manufacturing center on U. S. 290 East, has been struggling to keep up with the growth.

New parking lots - obviously a leading indicator of the imminent end of the cycle, if you're employed as an analyst. <g>
