Would Gelcore buy the diodes from Cree?

this clip from a ge lighting news release in january of last year...describes the gelcore LEDs.

GELcore will produce proprietary LEDs by converting Gallium Nitride-based blue semiconductor devices to white light through the combination of phosphors and plastics.

i think cree probably buys equipment from emcore...

Somerset, New Jersey, June 23, 1999... EMCORE Corporation (Nasdaq: EMKR) recently closed the sale of nine additional "SpectraBlue" Gallium Nitride (GaN) TurboDisc production systems, bringing the Company's total number of GaN tools sold to date to 51. TurboDisc GaN systems are used to manufacture high brightness light emitting diodes (HB- LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) in the blue segment of the color spectrum. All commercial production of these devices is dependent on GaN compound semiconductor technology.

the white LEDs i have seen in apps like flashlights are very large...totally unsuitable for cell phones or any handhelds, and the like...maybe that is why gelcore bought a traffic signal company.
i am looking at my LED flashlight now...the LEDs have a distinct yellow base. each LED is in what appears to be plastic packaging and is quite large....approx 0.4 cm each...there are 4 total. the light itself has a distinct bluish tinge. it is blue/white. a bit harsh imo.

cree mentioned in the cc that they may acquire a packaging company....is cree going to buy GE lighting?

at the following url you can color search under dominant wavelength...the only colors with products listed are yellow/amber, red/orange, and red.
gelcore.com

as you know, cree is not in the red, orange or yellow LED business.

if this rumor about GE and cree turns into orders for cree's LEDs...wow!
