Cirrus, Re: But why does AMD feel the need to announce two weeks early?

Easy: To give them some more publicity and help the stock price (remember it was at $54 just before the announcement!). I really like this kind of PR, especially because it doesn't contain any false statements. They just said they were now shipping the processors and expected them to be available on August, 28th. We will certainly see systems from Gateway and Compaq among others then. Of course, the press release wasn't necessary. It was just nice PR and an indication that AMD finally starts to care about their public image and the stock price.

BTW, you can already pre-order the 1.1 Ghz Thunderbird from some smaller vendors (see some postings here on the thread from the past few days). This time AMD is shipping in full quantities and we will have plenty of Pricewatch listings at the end of the month. And keep in mind that journalist from all over the world already have production samples of the CPU for several weeks now. I really don't see how this qualifies for a "paper launch". Actually it's far better than the original 1.0 Ghz launch in March.
