SINGAPORE (Jun 21, 1996 3:36 p.m. EDT) -- Acer Computer International Ltd., a unit of Taiwan's Acer Inc., is talking with three Singapore Internet service providers about buying its new pared-down computers, its chief executive said.
The talks reflect the company's current direction.
"Our strategy is to go into application-specific personal computers," said William Lu, the chief executive and chairman of Acer Computer International, said at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Singapore facility.
"With this approach, you can take down the unnecessary features and sell them for specific purposes," such as for banking, Internet, or entertainment, he said.
He said the company, which makes personal computers and peripherals, was negotiating with the three service providers in Singapore and others in the region.
The three Singapore providers are SingNet, a unit of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., the state-owned phone company; Pacific Internet, operated by a consortium led by Sembawang Corp.; and CyberWay, led by a unit of Singapore press Holdings Ltd.

Acer says its Singapore assembly plant, for instance, can fulfill a bulk order within three days.

Acer, he said, must differentiate itself and address untapped markets.

He said Acer Computer International, which sells to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Commonwealth of Independent States, is seeing higher-than-average growth or more than 20 percent expansion.
However, he said "it's too soon" to tell if the company can repeat last year's 60 percent expansion in sales to S$872.2 million ($623 million).
