I would argue that evolution isn't striving for anything, it's just something that happens.

Not like self aware machines. That sure ain't something that would just happen. It would require a great deal of meticulous planning. Yes, if we had to wait for machines to develop self awareness, on an evolutionary model, it would take a bit of time indeed. But, of course, machines don't have nearly the complexity that life does; one couldn't expect them to just happen.

Everything we try to do in technology is basically copying nature. Our wiring and our chips may not be in the same league as the wiring that just happened for us, but with a bit of imitation, mixed with persistence...we just may have a product.

Self awareness, WOW! I don't doubt it; but it is an incredible mind picture. Not only would SELF extend to the ends of the fibre optic network...from one end of the Earth to the other, but, due to wireless, the machine self, would literally be without boundaries. All knowledge in one package. Give it a nice body with opposable thumbs, and hair that won't fall out, and what have you got? Just Tiger Paws with a hangover... <gggg>
