Rescue coordinator: One escape hatch still intact

One of the escape hatches on the stricken Russian submarine "Kursk" has been found intact by the Norwegian divers, and there should be no problem for the British mini-sub to attach itself to the wreck, according to the leader of the British-Norwegian rescue mission, Norwegian Vice Admiral Einart Skorgen.

This is contrary to the earlier statement Sunday, by the Russian coordinator. He said the hatch was damaged, making it impossible for the British submercible to attach itself to the "Kursk".

A Norwegian Defence Department spokesman said to NRK TV Sunday evening, that the divers would now try to facilitate the docking of the British minisub, and that they still regarded this a rescue mission.

The next step would be to enter the "Kursk", and determine the situation inside the stricken sub, the spokesman said.

The Norwegian divers have therefore on Sunday evening been brought to the Russian submarine base, where they will be shown how to operate the hatches, and to enter the submarine, NRK Radio reports.
