I just received the September issue of LJ. There are several articles describing the use of Linux in embedded applications. This is one and on line.

The Next Bang: The Explosive Combination of Embedded Linux, XML and Instant Messaging

As potential soars for the collaboration between embedded Linux and instant messaging, we are bracing for a deluge of new applications and services. More importantly, we stand
on the threshold of a new way to think about--and use--the Internet.

To me another impact of this growth of embedded Linux is the fact that more and more support engineers will see the value and adopt Linux more and more. Process control and test engineering will see more and more growth.

Thus even sun and hp and all unix companies will have more and more Linux permeating their companies. This also means that more and more hardware and embedded system's engineers will be routing around in the guts of the kernel with logic analyzers and in-circuit emulators and this means more eyes and fewer bugs.

From the lowest level to the high level functionality of smp and journaling file systems Linux will just keep getting bigger and better.
