the value of a utility suite....

as i am wont to mention here from time to time, i enjoy symantec software products on my computers, and currently run the very comprehensive norton systemworks2000. one of the main components within nsw2k is norton utilities. and even deeper within the suite we find various 'doctors', such as windoctor.

immediately after downloading and installing the latest netscape browser tonight, windoctor automatically began to run in the background to check for problems, then triggered a red light sensor displaying on my desktop.

i ran the doctor again and it detected 8 invalid activeX/COM entries in the windows registry. (clearly they were there as a result of my browser upgrade, and clearly, had i not had systemworks on my machine, i would have had NO CLUE that they were there hiding.) literally, they were keys referring to missing files. windoctor 'informed' me that these invalid registry entries could cause documents to open improperly, applications not to run, or my computer to crash. the severity rating was medium, which i pay close attention to.

to make a long story endless, i then chose the repair option that lets windoctor fix these invalid activeX automatically, the way that it feels is safest and best. then i closed up the 'doctor' and went back to my computing, feeling real glad that i am running such useful software.

:)
