Scumbria re: being OT and saying Northern Canada being bare:

"While flying over the Arctic last week, I was rather surprised about how little snow and ice there was. Northern Canada was almost bare."

The far north does have a summer as well.. albeit brief and only a couple of months..

Even in winter, there is usually less snow and ice on the ground then in the south. Surprising? Not if you think about it. With the area being so remote, it cant be reached by warm moist air systems from the Gulf of Mexico, and only occasionally by systems from the Gulf of ALaska and Northern Pacific. It is thus dominated by large high pressure systems from Siberia and over northern Canada's arctic region.. bringing sunny and clear but very cold conditions in the winter months.

Here endeth the geography lesson and my minor role in educating our friends south of the border.
