Even in winter, there is usually less snow and ice on the ground then in the south. Surprising? Not if you think about it. With the area being so remote, it cant be reached by warm moist air systems from the Gulf of Mexico, and only occasionally by systems from the Gulf of ALaska and Northern Pacific. It is thus dominated by large high pressure systems from Siberia and over northern Canada's arctic region.. bringing sunny and clear but very cold conditions in the winter months.

But does that explain water (in lieu of ice) at the North Pole? It seems to me that something serious is happening.
