SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. here is mulling over plans for a 300-mm wafer fab to be built next to its 8-inch chip-processing facility in Dresden, Germany.

AMD officials acknowledge a new "Fab 35" is being considered and it could open in 2004--the 35th anniversary of the firm. However, the officials will not discuss where Fab 35 would be located just yet. Sources said AMD is seeking a partner, possibly Motorola Inc., to share the cost and operation of the new 300-mm fab.
