I already answered that. The double-speed ALU has no impact on pipeline bubbles. Its use is to speed up the sections in-between the pipeline bubbles where the real work needs to be done.

<There is also the unanswered issue of how it impacts clock speed. Until proven otherwise, I'm inclined to think that the double speed ALU may have been a very bad idea.>

Let's see. Pentium 4 can already reach speeds of 1.4 GHz and above on a 0.18u process. I doubt the CPU can run any faster had Intel decided on a single-speed ALU.

But hey, maybe questions like this will be answered during this year's Microprocessor Forum. Are you going again?
