MPU Update:

o AMD(C-2-1-9; $70.375) gears up for the back-to-school season with 28-44% price cuts and the release of 1.1GHz Thunderbird. As we had expected, AMD reduced prices for its Thunderbird and Duron processors as much as 44%. We believe that this move will allow AMD's products to be more broadly adopted into the market in the low and high-end markets, especially as the strong demand season begins. Therefore, we have further reason to believe that AMD is on target to deliver its projected shipments for the rest of the year - although without any great upside.

o AMD has also recently released a 1.1GHz Thunderbird to compete with Intel's 1.13GHz P-III for the back-to-school season. Although the product is already shipping, we expect to see its official appearance with major OEMs by the end of the month. We have also heard that AMD will release a Celeron 750MHz in the next few weeks in time for back to school.

o

o AMD's street prices have quickly followed the list price decline - falling 17- 40% since last week. This quick reaction indicates to us that supply remains good for AMD's lines.

o Intel's 1GHz products make their first appearance on the street. We have just begun to see listings for the 1GHz P-III - months after its official release. As expected, Intel will continue to ramp production 1GHz + products in order to stay competitive with AMD, who will ramp its MPUs to 1.4GHz by year-end. However, we note that we are seeing only a few 1.13GHz P-III listings, which are at a 20% premium to list. Until supply improves, we do not see the 1GHz+ products as a major contributor to Intel's revenues in the Q.
