Tim,

Orientations of magnetic material in the geological record allow scientists to determine the past location of geological materials. Over a period of 50,000,000 years even the continents move around quite a bit.

The north pole is the coldest place in the Northern Hemisphere. If ice at the north pole shows no signs of having melted over 50,000,000 years and it is melted now, the only reasonable conclusion which can be reached is that polar temperatures are at their warmest in 50,000,000 years. Had the ice moved there from some other (warmer) place, that would make the argument even stronger.
