Steve, Re the test,
as I said, strictly non-scientific, Sandisk 4Mb card, Lexar 32Mb. Copied 4Mb worth of JPEGS onto each (9 files). Used the stopwatch function on my watch<g>, and did each test 3 or 4 times, and the stopwatch to time the cycle delay on my digicam (could have used a grandfather clock for that).

One interesting fact I noticed, which I have also seen discussed in rec.photo.digital. There was a noticable difference in write time between writing to the 32Mb card, depending upon if the card had a few JPEGs (1 or 2) or was nearly full. I dont think this is Lexar, other people have made similar comments for other vendors. The cycle time on my (now positively ancient) HPC20 digicam was 7 seconds for empty Sandisk or Lexar, but 11 seconds on a nearly full Lexar. If anyone wants to send me a 32Mb Sandisk card <g> (or a new Canon S20?) I'll happily run some tests on those.

Its difficult to get price comparisons because a difference between vendors from one place may be eclipsed by another seller. You really need to see a trend over time. At one point someone (Ausdauer?) was keeping track of Sandisk availability?and price? from an on line store. I cant find a store that sells Sandisk and Lexar (though I did note with some irritation that 32Mb of CF from buy.com UK is UKP£109($165) whereas 64Mb of the same make CF from buy.com US is $110 but thats another story..
