Cooters - Thanks for those excerpts. I read through all three of them. First two parts about the warnings, while theoretically valid, seemed more like legal necessities.
While most of the opportunities and strategies we have pretty much discussed already, I found the following the most interesting.
We are currently developing integrated circuit solutions that incorporate multiple wireless operating standards, including multiple modes of 3G CDMA and GSM, on a single integrated circuit.
While we have heard reference to QCOM currently working on adding GSM to its chips on recent CC's, it has more impact to see it stated in print in a document going to the SEC.
Also, found the next sentences informative as to the scope of their future direction: We also intend to enhance our integrated circuits and system software by integrating new product features, including position location, multimedia capabilities, device connectivity, voice recognition, and peripheral memory devices. We intend to continue to pursue acquisitions and strategic relationships with companies that possess industry-leading capabilities in each of these emerging areas.
In fact, that whole strategy section (at the end of your third post), was most informative.
Finally, this part of the last paragraph: QUALCOMM has entered into royalty-bearing license arrangements with Intel, LSI Logic Corporation, Philips and PrairieComm, Inc. covering specified patents belonging to QUALCOMM applicable to integrated circuits. Pursuant to these arrangements, QUALCOMM's licensees are licensed to manufacture and sell cdmaOne and cdma2000 (and, in the case of Philips, WCDMA) integrated circuits to subscriber licensees of QUALCOMM. To date, most of those licensees have elected to purchase their CDMA integrated circuits and system software requirements from us.
Interesting to see 1) confirmation that INTEL is a CDMA2000 (3G) licensee and 2) that most of these buy QTL integrated circuits. Raises the quesiton for me as to what is it these licensees are selling to their customers, QCOM's chip repackaged under their own brand? Can anyone explain the meaning of this sentence to me? |
